A Visit From Mother Sam

My mom came out for a visit the last week of March to finish up a final work-related training session, but we managed to have some fun while she was here.

On Saturday, we got up early and headed out to the Austin Farmer’s Market.

The whole concept is pretty simple.  Local farmers bring their crops to the square and sell them directly to the people.  There are also a lot of local companies and food vendors giving out samples and selling their products.

I tried a vegan cinnamon roll from a local bakery and also tried some fabulous hummus.  We picked up some mushrooms, romaine lettuce and cilantro.  Mom bought us some seasoned feta and it r00lz.

We worked up an appetite looking at all of that food, so we walked a few blocks and stopped for brunch at Opal Divine’s.

Once again, the food was delicious.  Trav ordered the Hippie Benedict (eggs benedict with tomato & avocado slices with sunflower sprouts and smothered with Hollandaise sauce).  Mom built her own omelette and I had the Four Cheese Omelette (Havarti, smoked provolone, pepper jack and cheddar).  We loved it and the place is dog friendly, so Carl can go next time.  AND!  We found out there are two other locations and one is super close to the house.  WIN!

That night, we went to the Austin Rodeo.  I know what you’re thinking…Rach and Trav at the rodeo?  What?  Well our friend, Billy, plays in a band and they were playing the rodeo.  Billy hooked us up with passes so we could catch the show.

The show was awesome.  Billy plays keys for Sean McConnell.  Sean has written songs for artists like Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and Meatloaf.  You should peep his stuff: http://seanmcconnell.com/.

For Mom’s last night in town, we went to Red’s Porch for dinner.  You can probably guess what I’m going to say…great food!  I had the Spinach Creole Salad (candied pecans, red onions, goat cheese, jalapeno fries with creole honey mustard dressing).  Mom got the meatloaf with spinach casserole and Trav had the South Lamar (grilled portobello, zucchini, red onions, mixed greens, smoked mozzarella & roma tomatoes with black olive pesto – served on a New Orleans baguette).

The vibe at Red’s is really cool…retro meets modern.  There’s a really big deck on top of the building, but it was a little cold/windy that night.  We’ll definitely go back again and sit outside.
